This presentation is a survey of production usage of JSF from around the world. From creating turn-key online applications for mid-sized businesses in the UK, to a Joomla replacement in West Africa, to applications developed to the Brazilian government, to supporting millions of GPS users, JSF is in action everywhere. Ed will share interviews and insights on how JSF is used in production from several fun customers.

The complexity and bloat often associated with Java EE are largely due to the inherent complexity of distributed computing; otherwise, the platform is surprisingly simple. Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.1 actually consists of annotated classes and interfaces that are even leaner than classic POJOs; it would be hard to find anything more to simplify. Nonetheless, (mis)use of Java EE can lead to bloated and overstated architectures. The combination of technologies from Java SE (annotations, generics, enums), with reasonable conventions and Dependency Injection enables new idioms, approaches and makes the realization of ultra-lean applications possible. This session introduces minimalistic, but stilly maintainable and extensible Java EE 6 / EJB 3.1 based architectures with JSR-299 / JSR-330, REST, JPA 2.0.

RichFaces is a rich JSF framework with over 100 Ajax components, skins, themes and rich component development kit. Although JSF 2.0 now offers basic Ajax functionality, a rich component library is still needed to build JSF Ajax applications. This session will demonstrate the new RichFaces 4.0 (JSF 2 based) as well as demonstrate what advanced features, customization, flexibility and richness it adds on top of JSF 2.0.

Rapid advancements in mobile browsers, such as iPhone Safari and BlackBerry Bold, present new challenges for mobile developers. It is desirable to leverage the Ajax capabilities in smart-phone browsers while maintaining compatibility with less capable mobile browsers. Mobile devices' vastly different processing power and network speeds introduce major variations in mobile Web performance. Each mobile device is optimized to support a particular UI navigation pattern -- iPhone is optimized for finger navigation, whereas BlackBerry devices are optimized for track-wheel use. To deliver an easy-to-use and performant user interface, Web apps cannot simply render the same UI across all mobile browsers. JavaServer Faces technology enables any UI component to be rendered differently on various mobile device browsers, thus offering a framework that can meet the foregoing challenges.

This session discusses mobile browser rendering support in the MyFaces Trinidad JavaServer Faces components, where the same component can leverage Ajax and advanced processing/network capabilities in the smart-phone browsers while remaining compatible and performant on less capable, plain-HTML browsers. It also covers techniques for using MyFaces Trinidad components and style sheets to achieve a mobile-device-friendly UI for a variety of mobile devices, all within the same app. Last, it offers lessons learned during the development of a mobile device render kit in the MyFaces Trinidad project.

At the end we will have an outlook to the Trinidad 2.0 version, which supports JSF 2.0

The Portlet Bridge (JSR 301 or JSR 329) provides a Faces compatible runtime environment in a Java portlet environment enabling a JSF application to simultaneously be published as a web application and a portlet. This talk introduces you to the Portlet Bridge and shows you how to use it in your applications. Demonstrations are provided to illustrate concepts.

- The difference between JSR 301 and JSR 329.
- Extending a Faces application so it also runs as a portlet.
- An overview of the bridge's configuration flexibility to adapt to differing Faces and application environments.

Search has become a fundamental tool not only for Web applications but also for internal and rich applications. Data should be found efficiently and fast. Solving this problem encompass both technical and user interaction design decisions.

This presentation will demonstrate a practical approach to expose your data through the search feature using Hibernate Search and Lucene. This demonstration will show you how the tools has been designed for simplicity and freedom to make user interface decisions.

A search engine user interface is deeply impacted by how the search engine approach the user question and answer it. We will explore some of the benefits Full-Text search and various decisions you have to make as an application developer:

• - using approximation to recover common typos
• - using phonetic approximation to recover from creative user queries
• - using synonyms and stemming (words from the same family) to redirect searches to the right documents

The presentation will be mixed with demos. Each approach to enhance the search engine, whether it be approximation, stemming and so on) will be followed by a demonstration showing how this can be done in practice and an explanation on how the magic happens under the cover.

Any developer interested in enhancing applications search functionality should attend this session.

Stephan Janssen’s presentation is organized around Parleys.com, a next generation eLearning web site whose front end is implemented in Flex. He explains why they dumped DHTML and switched to Flex/AIR. He also talks about two technologies that could be used instead, GWT and JavaFX, presenting their pros/cons.

Apache Wicket is a Java framework for the development of clean and component based web applications based on plain HTML, object orientation and Java without any additional configuration. This talk introduces the framework by showing the concepts and explaining the basics of writing web applications with Wicket. In addition to that we will also touch on some advanced topics like AJAX and the extraction of reusable components. Finally we will also take a critical look at the usage of Wicket.

REST, the REpresentational State Transfer, is the architectural style underlying the HTTP protocol. In the last couple of years, REST has emerged as a compelling and simpler alternative to SOAP/WSDL/WS-*- based distributed architectures. In this session, Arjen will explain what REST is, how it can be used to build Web Services, and where it makes sense to use. In this session, we will look RESTful frameworks focus on creating RESTful Web services with the Spring framework, both on the server- and client-side.
